John Oldfield é Professor na Universidade de Hull, onde ensina Escravatura e Emancipação. Escreveu abundantemente sobre a história da escravatura e da abolição da escravatura no Mundo Atlântico, entre 1750-1850. As suas principais publicações incluem Chords of Freedom: Commemoration, Ritual and British Transatlantic Slavery (Manchester University Press, 2007) e, mais recentemente, The Ties that Bind: Transatlantic Abolitionism in the Age of Reform, c. 1820-1865 (Liverpool University Press, 2020). É investigador principal/coordenador do projecto ECHOES e, entre 2013 e 2019 foi diretor do Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation.
